DaPoPo Theatre is pleased to announce the premiere of Broadway Boyz: a new Musical Revue with original book, music, and lyrics by Forbes MacQuarrie, Patrick Maubert, and DaPoPo Theatre Artistic Director Garry Williams. Broadway Boyz tells the story of three gay boys who dream of careers on Broadway, only to awaken to a darker, harsher reality. These artists explore their love for Musical Theatre, their queerness, and their struggles in an unkind industry, all while celebrating the identities they have come to own through rejection, hardship, and by simply being fabulous.

“This is a one-hour confessional about our love for Musical Theatre and our struggles as gays in a queer, yet hetero-celebrating industry” says 2019 Merritt Award Winning Composer/Lyricist, Garry Williams, whose original musical KAMP with a book by Jamie Bradley won five Merritt Awards earlier this year.

“Broadway Boyz is a new show – we’re still writing it, and always will be. We hope to talk, sing, and dance our way through first love, heartbreak, trauma, and success,” says show producer Quincy Russell, who is one of DaPoPo’s Associate Directors. “It’s what an aspiring artist should be told; it’s what seasoned artists have been waiting to hear, and/or have yet to write; and it’s what audiences, (committed; new; and would-be), need to know.”

Williams is joined by Patrick Maubert and Forbes MacQuarrie.

Patrick has worked internationally in a range of cross-genre projects from musical to physical theatre. For several years Patrick toured internationally as a member of The 12 Tenors. He is the Associate Artistic Director of Toronto’s No Strings Theatre and is the Director of the Encores Musical Theatre Program at Northwood Halifax Campus. A Voice, Speech Arts, Drama teacher, Patrick strives to create a compassionate, cultural landscape accessible for all.

Forbes MacQuarrie is a trained operatic soprano, graduate of Canadian College of Performing Arts, social worker, drag queen, and entertainter. A lifelong fan of irreverence and subversion, Forbes decided to leave theatre to pursue a life of community work. Forbes’ favourite roles include Hunter from [title of show] and Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast.

Broadway Boyz carries DaPoPo’s legacy of creating original musical revues for Halifax Fringe. Previous Fringe Festival productions include So, What About Love? and The FEAR Project. For fans of DaPoPo’s work, Broadway Boyz celebrates our identity as a company – offering an insight into who we are, where we’ve been, and where we’re going.
